The Beer Cave!

This would be the massive beer refrigerator found in the back of any convenience store. Sadly, we didn’t find any beer bears sleeping in the back of the beer cave.

El Orfanato

23.Jan.2008

I meant to get this review out during the Christmas break when I saw the movie but I haven’t had a minute to even breathe since.

El Orfanato comes from the land of EspaƱa where they know how to make a good thriller that doesn’t require buckets of blood and a grotesque looking monster. No, the Spaniards know how to use subtlety, camera angles, and music with the all important presentation of a story. This does come with a price though, subtitles. Personally, I don’t mind subtitles at all but I know a fair share of people that will absolutely refuse to watch a film if subtitles exist. Fools.

The story opens with a family of three moving back to the wife’s childhood home, an orphanage. Dreams of refurbishing the establishment and re-opening it as a home for disabled orphans get derailed as strange occurrences begin to take place. The son creates an imaginary friend as any normal five year old might but when the invisible friend appears to be real and the son disappears, it gets real creepy, real quick. The story finds itself folding back on the time when the wife was a child at the orphanage and unraveling quite an interesting mystery while raising the hair on your head and putting your heart squarely in your throat on more than one occasion.

People like to categorize films like this as horror, but I don’t think that is very fair. Horror always seems to conjure up the likes of Freddy and Jason or more frequently the torture porn genre these days. Inevitably, this usually sends most people running for the hills. But if you like a truly scary movie that doesn’t include the gross out factor, this one will definitely scare your socks off!
