Sunburns and Stiff Necks

6.Apr.2008

I went to the Tyndall AFB airshow last weekend and finally got a chance to put my D80 through the paces I’ve been wanting to ever since I got it. I shot over 700 photos between 11am and 5pm. The battery never even reached half charge.

Over The Top

This and some 200 plus photos are up in the gallery. If you seen one you like, let me know and I’ll email the full size version to you.

Oh yeah, I’m sure you’ll agree that the Nikon passed the test. One could say with flying colors!

Sorry.

  1. Nice shooting!  And good luck with the Blackhawk training.

  2. The Aeroshell team shots look the best all grouped together as thumbnails on the Flickr page!! Very cool. And the top-to-top of the Thunderbirds also very cool. What lens were you using?

  3. First and foremost, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for finally changing that banner…  How misleading for the public, since you were sort of / kind of flying the “real deal” for over three months!  :-P

Secondly, how cool is MY plane!  i daresay, it’s the bestest picture out of the bunch…  yey!!!  i still would love to see that puppy in person… so maybe one of the air shows when you are back.  date?  hahahahaha  :-)

  4. Me – I was using the 18-135 mm kit lens that came with the
camera. And yes, I fell in love with the Aeroshell team as is apparent from the photos. Not only because of their photogenic-ness but their skill at precision. I’ll take these guys over the T-birds or Angels any day! The radial helps a bit too. :-)

tk – I apologize for the delay in getting a new banner up at your request. I haven’t had much to do of late and really have no excuse for why. However, in looking for new ideas I thought I might take a look at all the banners you created in the two years you wrote your blog but I couldn’t find them. Could I just be looking in the wrong place?

As for your C-17, I’ll just take you over to LGB where they’re made. You can get all up close and personal there.

  5. precisely…  you WERE looking in the wrong place.  my blog was for creative complaining, not artistic outbursts via the banners.  i apologize profusely for the fact that my “ghost town” of a blog was in no way inspirational for you…
as of C-17, i don’t want to see where they’re made (i have hookups at boeing, so technically, i can see that any time i want).  i’d like to see the finished product, preferrably with a couple of tanks inside of it.  :)

  6. Those very radials actually made me cry the first time I heard them in my feet at Oshkosh. When that crae-zee Waco w/ the Jet (was that the plane that killed the pilot? can’t remember…anyway…it was the Masters of Disaster) came from stage right, I was just confused. And later in the week when I FELL ASLEEP during an airshow, well, I just didn’t know what to think.
Some friends recently asked which to buy: Canon or Nikon. I, a Canon owner, actually told them to go for the Nikon. (They’ve already got some N equipment anyway.)

  7. OLYMPUS E3 baby !!!  ALL THE WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. tk – I’d suggest the March AFB airshow but that occurs in early May and I already have travel plans. :-p You can always keep your fingers crossed for Miramar in October. And you’ll never see the 17 with a couple tanks, it could only hold one Abrams if they ever loaded one but that would be way too inefficient. You’re more likely to see 3 or 4 Blackhawks inside. The Chair Force, our delivery service!

Me – you’re dead to me. Fell asleep at an airshow, geez… Next, you’re going to tell me it was Oshkosh!

No Look – I’m sorry, remind me again how many contests you’ve won with that Olympus?

  9. Touche, grasshopper..   You and yer Nike grabbed some nice pics..  Guess you could say, right out of thin air !
But, if I may?  While my Nikon’s have allowed me to capture a fare share of life’s photo ops (a few of which HAVE been published) and my Hassi’s have been lugged to some of the highest and lowest points on earth (physical as well as mental) I must confess my love affair of some years now with “That Olympus”.  Weather tight body/lens, 4/3rds system, sonic wave filter, digital specific lenses, skin tones to die for, etc, etc..
Hey, at least we agree on the digital format, eh..
tk.. 160.. Say it with me “146 tooooo short”..  Trust me darling..

  10. uhm… aren’t there some “tank-looking” things that are lighter, so my “tank-stuffed-plane” fantasy can be fullfilled?  i thought the army had EVERYTHING…  apparently not!  :-P

and, mr. no look sir…  NO!!! I SHALL NOT SAY THAT!!! 146 is what i want, and that automatically assumes that 146 is what i’ll have, for i get what i want…  now, say it with me “i give up. she won’t change her mind”…   thanks much!  :-)
