The idea for this theme hit me while I was working on a Blackhawk last week. I stood up to stretch my back, took in the scene and it just kind of hit me. So I snapped some photos (with my phone, unfortunately) and ran some ideas through my head. Work then got shelved while my body decided to become deathly ill earlier in the week. Very inconsiderate, if you ask me.

I finally got around to putting the finishing touches on it yesterday and within minutes of chasing out the last few bugs, I got a call. Uncle Sam just wanted to let me know I had another date, completely ruining the theme.

I didn’t find that amusing.

I was never truly happy with it either, but it did make things easy (to some degree). Anyway, in search of something better and less glitchy I have gone with my friend, Flickr.

Now you can leave those derogatory comments you always wanted to leave but never could! Most of the photos are the same, however there are some new ones spread through the sets. Enjoy.

As you read this I am most likely sitting at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) bored out of my mind waiting for paperwork and tickets for travel to South Carolina. Latest reports have it that I will be staying the night here in L.A. and then travelling on Wednesday. But who knows!

Why, you ask? Because the government seems to be leery of the government buying giant blocks of airline tickets less than 24 hours prior!! Yes, that’s right, can you imagine it? The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. Shocking, I know. And yes, I’m still jumping into this head first.
For those who don’t know, I became U.S. Government property this morning around 5a.m. as I arrived for boot camp. Nine weeks of having a D.I. (Drill Instructor) yelling in my face, re-learning how high when the Army says ‘jump,’ and getting to throw grenades. At all other times I imagine I will be in the front leaning rest position (push up position)!

This means the blog will not be updated as regularly as usual, not that it really gets updated all that often, but thought you might like to know just in case.

However!

I have slipped some posts in that will pop up from time to time throughout the next two months detailing a little excursion I took down to Honduras in the summer of 2000.

I will also have the opportunity to write snail mail in boot camp, so once I get situated and have a chance to write there will be a ghost writer (Mom) posting the letters here. I’m sure it will provide great fodder watching my arse get kicked from one end of the Fort to the other.

That first letter should also contain the address where I can receive mail. So if you’re feeling sorry for me or laughing as I’m sure Connelly and Ken will be doing, get out that old fashioned pen and paper and tell me how bad you think this blog is! I’ll do my best to send you a retort if I feel your letter merits one.

And with that, I depart until sometime in April. Goodbye, net!

Shoup

In my daily travels across the internet, I came across the coolest thing today: a search engine that donates money to the charity of your choosing.

GoodSearch was created by a brother/sister team that in losing their mother to cancer wanted to find an easy way for people to help their causes. This is what they came up with.

It’s powered by Yahoo’s search engine. Not quite Google, but powerful in it’s own right.

They get the donation money from the advertising revenue they generate. So go search now! We all know that’s what you’re doing instead of working right now. So why not do some good as well?

Go check it out! I’ll shutup now.

Some of you may have seen phantom links appearing and disappearing the last week or two and wondering what was going on, or more likely, couldn’t have cared less. Here’s why —->

You now have a Gallery to browse at your leisure, but will most likely use to help procrastinate at work. Some photos are old, some are new, most have comments, but not all. There is still more to come, I just haven’t had the time to put everything in yet.

The programming may still be a bit buggy, but that’s what I get for stripping someone else’s idea. My hat goes off to Keytwo for all his work and help. Be patient if the Gallery starts acting up, but let me know. I haven’t thoroughly tested everything. For those of you using IE, get out of the stone age and download Firefox!

Now, without further ado, I present the Shoup Airlines Gallery!

I.E. SUCKS!! Granted most things that come from Microsoft generally bite the big one, but Internet Explorer is the epitome of all that is bad in my eyes. AOL comes in with a close second, but I digress. There is definitely something to be said for open source code and creative commons licensing. Bill Gates, your empire will crumble soon, very soon.

Being recently employed again, I find myself sitting at a cubicle with a computer, an Internet connection, and a lot of dead time on my hands. Gee, what’s a boy to do!? At first, I’m reluctant to reconfigure the laptop to my specs (ie: Firefox, Google, Open Office, etc.) so I relent to using I.E., rapidly remembering why I dropped it in the first place, it sucks! I also soon discover that my website appears without half of the images showing! I thought it may have been some coding that I had screwed up (this means late nights and lots of frustration because I have no kung-foo), but then I pulled the site up in Firefox and everything was once again at peace with the world. The nano-second this realization fires a synapse in my brain I’m ready to drop kick Mr. Gates and his world of Windows into the dark ages.

All of my code works fine in every other stinking internet browser except for I.E. $&@*$%!! I’m not only livid that I.E. has once again failed in it’s inadequacy, I’m pissed off because I know this isn’t going to be an easy fix, once again causing the late nights and frustrations! Most would say why not just leave it and let those with I.E. miss out on ALL the goodness that is Shoup Airlines? I began to think this as well (which isn’t usually my normal train of thought) until I saw the stats this month and found that 75% of the visitors are using I.E. That is sad, but I have to accept it. So, after roughly a week of comparing others code and image location settings in I.E., I found that it was several SPACES that caused I.E. to spew forth this crap, or more appropriately NOT spew forth the crap. That’s right! Spaces, those little voids between each word that makereadingeasieronyoureyes has long since been adapted to the coding world as well!! Apparently, Bill didn’t get that memo. Maybe he’s a bit tied up with a blue screen of death on his latest world subjugation project, Longhorn.

I apologize for those of you that have to view the Internet through I.E. If you have the option, I highly recommend switching to Firefox, as the image that should NOW appear in the sidebar to the right indicates. Words cannot express the level of superiority that Firefox and other fine applications of Mozilla hold over Windows products. Please now, enjoy Shoup Airlines in all it’s intended goodness, or badness, depending on how you look at this website.

Oh yeah, one more thing…I.E. SUCKS!!

It has come to my attention that some of you have questions about commenting on this blog. I’m surprised anyone has questions, let alone wants to comment. Why? Then again, it’s more likely you just want a petition to boot this meaningless drivel off the internet. I don’t blame ya, I think this guy sucks too!

So, in order to get enough of you frothing at the mouth one must first read the latest entry or whichever entry one fancies causing said frothing. Second, the frothing reader will notice several links at the bottom of each entry, one of which indicates “Comments.” Keep in mind this assumes the reader was either so bored at work that reading the whole entry was less painful than staring at the clock or it finally pushed the reader into a seething rage so fierce he or she felt the need to express their ire to anyone else dumb enough to read the entry.

If you, the reader, fit into either of these categories or any category you feel like fitting into please click on the link labeled “Comments” and express whatever ill will and dislike for the author’s kin that you may have. Each and every precious comment you create will be archived and possibly read by other commenters, much like yourself! You’ll be in good company, many of whom will be carrying pitch forks and lit torches banging at the gates of Shoup, but nonetheless good company with a focused ideal. What more could one ask for?

After clicking on the “Comments” link, the entry will appear again just to double check that those pissed off are REALLY pissed off. Scroll down to the bottom where it says you must be logged in to comment. Click on this link and it will take you to a WordPress Login Screen, this is normal. Click on the link entitled “Register” and follow the directions. For those paranoid about giving up their email addresses or why they have to come up with a username, one word: SPAM. It’s all about the spam and keeping the spammers that spaminate blogs from spaminating this uniquely divine creation. A username and email address makes it more difficult for spammers to dump their crap here. Telemarketers don’t want you calling them, why would spammers want you to email them? Besides, this way if the author doesn’t like what you have to say he can spam you!! Be assured, your email address will not be published for all to see, just the username, unless you’re like that and want everyone else to see it…freak!

This is also your chance to show off that prowess you have been dying to share with the world by creating the wittiest username ever like Runtrent and Wingmonkey! After registering, a text window should appear and everything else should be self explanatory. Type away! Any questions? Yes? Leave a comment!!
